The Ultimate Guide to Paddington Station: Travel Tips for Hotel Guests

For many visitors, Paddington Station is the first thing they see when they arrive in London. As one of the city’s most iconic transport hubs, it can be a little overwhelming!

Here are our top tips for navigating the station like a local during your stay at the Prince William Hotel…

Speed to the Airport: The Heathrow Express

If you’re flying into London Heathrow, there is no better way to reach us than the Heathrow Express.

  • Speed: It takes just 15 minutes to reach Paddington from the airport.

  • Frequency: Trains depart every 15 minutes.

  • Tip: Book your tickets at least 90 days in advance online to secure fares as low as £10.

Connections to the Rest of London

Paddington is served by four major Tube lines, making it a dream for sightseeing:

  • Elizabeth Line: The newest and fastest way to get to the City, Canary Wharf, and East London.

  • District & Circle Lines: Direct links to Westminster (for Big Ben), South Kensington (for museums), and Victoria.

  • Bakerloo Line: Takes you straight to Baker Street, Regent’s Park, and the heart of the West End.

Planning Your Journey Across London

London’s transport network is vast, but technology makes it incredibly simple to navigate. Here is how to plan your day like a savvy Londoner:

1. Use the Right Apps

Don’t rely on static paper maps. Download TfL Go (the official Transport for London app) or Citymapper. These apps provide real-time updates on delays and even tell you exactly which carriage to board so you are closest to the exit at your destination.

2. Tap and Go (Contactless is King)

Gone are the days of queuing at ticket machines. You can use your contactless bank card, smartphone, or smartwatch (Apple Pay/Google Pay) to pass through the Tube entry barriers.

  • Daily Capping: London uses a “capping” system. Once you spend a certain amount in a day (currently around £8.90 for Zones 1-2), all further journeys that day are free.

  • Important: Always use the same card or device to “tap in” and “tap out” to ensure you are charged the correct capped rate.

3. The “Pink Reader” Secret

When changing between certain lines (like moving from the Overground to the Tube), you might see pink card readers. Always tap these; they tell the system you took a specific route that avoids Zone 1, often making your journey cheaper!

Meeting the Resident Celebrity

Finally, no visit to the station is complete without seeing the Paddington Bear statue! You’ll find him sitting on his suitcase under the clock on Platform 1. It’s the perfect spot for a “just arrived” selfie before making the short walk to the Prince William Hotel.

Getting to the Hotel

Once you arrive at Paddington Station, finding the Prince William Hotel is a breeze. You are only about a 5-minute walk away from our front desk.

  • Exit via the Praed Street side: Head toward the main station entrance.

  • Follow Craven Road: Turn west and walk straight along Craven Road. You’ll pass the HSBC bank and a variety of local cafes.

  • The Corner of Gloucester Terrace: At the second set of traffic lights, you’ll find us on the corner of Gloucester Terrace. Look for our beautiful 18th-century white-stucco façade.

  • Luggage Tip: If you have heavy bags, there is a taxi rank directly inside Paddington Station. The ride to the hotel takes about 2-3 minutes and usually costs under £10.
